Classic Movies Live – Season 5, Episode 3: The Zone of Interest
February 14, 2024Three episodes into our 2024 Best Picture marathon, and we’re at the first non-English feature!
Directed by Jonathan Glazer and based very loosely on both the book of the same name by Martin Amis and the real life of Rudolf and Hedwig Höss, The Zone of Interest is a terrifying and poignant holocaust film unlike anything else this year. Taking place directly next door to Auschwitz, Zone is just as much about what the audience never sees as it is about what they do.
To quote Glazer himself: “[Zone] is not a film about the past. It’s trying to be about now”. Accordingly, this episode quickly delves into modern political topics including discussions of ongoing international conflicts.
Today’s episode features Jeff and special guest rach, who was last heard in a very different episode, Kickin’ It With Kendrick, Episode 21: Romantic Comedies and Mr. Right. For more of rach, check out her Substack, where she regularly posts meditations on gender in popular culture.
