This week on Classic Movies Live, we’re talking about a movie that was at the Toronto International Film Festival!
As TIFF 2024 rages, we look back to TIFF 2023 to discuss Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, starring everyone’s favourite actor Glenn Powell. In Hit Man, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a psychology professor who moonlights as a fake hitman in police sting operations. When one of the stings goes differently than expected, Johnson becomes romantically involved with the unhappily married Madison Masters (Adria Arjona). But having met Masters as “Ron the Hitman”, Johnson is forced to live a double life, adopting the charismatic persona of Ron permanently around Masters, while continuing his life as Gary everywhere else.
Mostly a romantic comedy, Hit Man hits on themes that go deeper, talking about issues with the American legal system, and examining the kind of person who would order a hit man in the first place. It’s an immensely fun movie, with plenty under the surface.
