Classic Movies Live – Season 5, Episode 32: Megalopolis
October 9, 2024This week on Classic Movies Live!, it’s the return of a classic director!
Saying Francis Ford Coppola is best known for The Godfather isn’t wrong, but it neglects his absurd run of some of the best films ever made. Apocalypse Now, The Conversation, One From the Heart, and of course the other two Godfather films. Not to mention he’s the first of many amazing filmmakers to carry the last name Coppola. We’ve talked about plenty of Coppolas on the show, including Francis’ daughter Sofia and nephew Nic Cage, but only in a single episode did we touch on the man himself.
But in 2024, Francis Ford returned to theatres with an astoundingly ambitious and confounding opus: Megalopolis. First conceived over 30 years ago, Megalopolis is a passion project Coppola has been trying to figure out how to make ever since. Giancarlo Esposito, who appears in the finished film as Franklyn Cicero, was cast , first read for the film over two decades ago. This year, with a hefty loan and after a frankly nightmarish production, Coppola finally managed to bring his vision to the screen.
So is that vision good? Critics have been mixed, but you have yet to hear Jeff and Pierre’s takes! Today, our hosts sit down to talk about the experience of seeing Megalopolis in a crowded theatre on opening night. You don’t want to miss this episode: clocking in at an hour and a half, our hosts could have gone on for hours with their thoughts about this movie!
