Hollywood, the 1920s. Silent movies were all the rage, and the biggest names in pictures were the biggest names in America! Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Nellie LaRoy, James, Henry! All the stars are here! But when “talkies” came in, things changed. Not everyone who had flourished on the silver screen could handle taking speaking parts. Certainly not those lovable little yellow guys, the Minions!
Taking a page from Sunset Boulevard, Babylon, and plenty others that came before, Minions and Monsters places those crazy French henchmen in the backlots of Los Angeles, and imagines a Studio City in which James — a one-eyed Minion blessed by the Muse — aspires to be an Oscar-winning director!
The first solo directorial effort from Pierre Coffin — who co-created the Despicable Me series and voices the Minions — Minions and Monsters is a departure for the series. One filled with visible passion for film and the Minions themselves. That is to say: Minions and Monsters is, perhaps surprisingly, something of a passion project for Coffin, or at least it really feels like it.
